How We Verify Canadian Brands & Products

Our mission is to help Canadian consumers spend intentionally by surfacing authentic domestic makers, family-owned factories, and genuine Canadian alternatives to multinational conglomerates. Here is our rigorous verification process and editorial policy.

1. Our Verification Hierarchy

Not all Canadian brands operate under the same model. We clearly distinguish between domestic manufacturing and corporate equity to provide 100% transparency:

Tier 1: Made & Owned

Made in Canada & Canadian-Owned

Both corporate equity/headquarters and physical fabrication occur in Canada under Competition Bureau standards. The gold standard for domestic economic support.

Tier 2: Made in Canada

Domestic Manufacturing

The product is cut, sewn, brewed, forged, or assembled in Canadian unionized mills or family facilities, providing domestic Canadian manufacturing jobs.

Tier 3: Canadian-Owned

Headquartered in Canada

Founders, management, and headquarters reside in Canada. Raw materials or specialized technical assembly may occur internationally due to lack of domestic supply chains.

2. Strict Adherence to Canadian Competition Bureau Standards

We strictly uphold the statutory enforcement guidelines established by the Competition Bureau Canada under the Competition Act:

  • "Product of Canada" (98% threshold): Virtually all direct production costs, raw commodities, and labor must have originated domestically.
  • "Made in Canada with imported parts" (51% threshold): At least 51% of total direct manufacturing costs are incurred in Canada, and the product underwent its last substantial transformation in Canada.
  • Rejection of "Designed in Canada" as domestic making: We never label products as "Made in Canada" if they are only designed on computers in Canada while 100% of physical manufacturing is offshore.

3. Independent Editorial Standards & Buying Guides

Our 16+ investigative buying guides and product comparisons are authored independently by Canadian researchers, engineers, and product specialists. Brands cannot pay for favorable reviews, higher rankings, or guaranteed editorial endorsements.

When we review winter parkas, footwear, raw denim, cast iron cookware, or organic bedding, our team inspects stitching density, material tensile strength, warranty terms, and corporate ownership filings to ensure our recommendations are truthful and beneficial to Canadian households.

4. Corrections & Brand Inquiries

Corporate acquisitions happen rapidly. When a domestic Canadian heritage brand is acquired by a foreign conglomerate or moves manufacturing lines offshore, we update our records promptly.

If you represent a Canadian brand and wish to submit corporate proof, update factory locations, or report an error in our directory, please email our editorial desk directly at [email protected].
